What are the health benefits of Clostridium butyricum?

Clostridium butyricum is studied mainly for its ability to produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid researched in relation to gut barrier function, intestinal energy metabolism, immune signaling and host-microbiome interactions. Specific strains have been used as probiotics, especially in Asia, but benefits are strain- and preparation-specific. SwissMedicare offers a Clostridium butyricum postbiotic ingredient for microbiome-focused supplement and functional-food formulations.

What are the potential side effects of Clostridium butyricum?

Clostridium butyricum probiotic strains are generally well tolerated, with occasional mild digestive effects such as gas or bloating. Safety is strain-specific: rare toxigenic strains carrying botulinum neurotoxin type E genes have been linked to infant botulism, so careful strain characterization is essential. Immunocompromised people, infants and pregnant women should consult a healthcare professional before use. Postbiotic preparations contain no live cells.

Where is Clostridium butyricum naturally found?

Clostridium butyricum is naturally found in soil, decaying plant material and the intestines of healthy humans and animals. It has also been isolated from fermented and dairy foods such as some cheeses and sour milk. As an anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium, it survives harsh conditions as resistant spores and grows in oxygen-free environments like the gut.

How does Clostridium butyricum produce butyric acid?

Clostridium butyricum produces butyric acid by anaerobically fermenting carbohydrates. Sugars are broken down via glycolysis to pyruvate, then to acetyl-CoA; two acetyl-CoA molecules join to form acetoacetyl-CoA, which is reduced through crotonyl-CoA to butyryl-CoA. Butyryl-CoA is finally converted to butyrate, mainly via phosphotransbutyrylase and butyrate kinase, generating ATP along with hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

What is the taxonomic classification of Clostridium butyricum?

Clostridium butyricum is classified in the domain Bacteria, phylum Bacillota (formerly Firmicutes), class Clostridia, order Eubacteriales (formerly Clostridiales), family Clostridiaceae and genus Clostridium, species C. butyricum. It is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, strictly anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium known for butyrate production.

What is Clostridium butyricum used for?

Clostridium butyricum is used as a probiotic in parts of Asia, notably the MIYAIRI 588 strain, in animal feed, and in research on butyrate and short-chain fatty acids. Its non-living postbiotic form is evaluated for dietary supplements, functional foods, beverages and multi-ingredient microbiome products. SwissMedicare Probiotics supports B2B customers with Clostridium butyricum postbiotic sourcing, technical documentation and formulation development.

Who should not take butyric acid?

People who should avoid butyric acid or butyrate supplements without medical advice include pregnant or breastfeeding women and children, because safety data are limited, and anyone with a known sensitivity to the product or its ingredients. Those with gastrointestinal disease, serious medical conditions or who take regular medication should also consult a healthcare professional before use. Mild digestive upset can occur.

Is Clostridium butyricum good or bad?

Clostridium butyricum is generally considered beneficial when a well-characterized strain is used, as it produces butyrate and has a history of probiotic use in Asia. However, the species is strain-diverse, and rare strains can produce botulinum neurotoxin type E. Proper strain selection and safety assessment are essential. SwissMedicare's Clostridium butyricum postbiotic is a non-living, characterized preparation for formulation use.

What does Clostridium butyricum cause?

Clostridium butyricum does not usually cause disease; most strains are harmless gut and soil bacteria. Rarely, toxigenic strains producing botulinum neurotoxin type E have caused infant botulism and foodborne botulism, and the species has been associated with some cases of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis. These risks are strain-specific, which is why probiotic and postbiotic ingredients rely on characterized, safety-assessed strains.
